Homework Weeks of 4/14-4/25
If you did not read it Sunday, read “Say Yes” 808 ( Tobias Wolff)
NO CLASS TUESDAY
Tuesday 4/15 “The Lesson” 61 (Toni Cade Bambara)
Wednesday 4/16 “Two Kinds” 731 (Amy Tan)
Thursday 4/17 “The Story of an Hour” 158 (Chopin)
With this very short story–pay exceptionally close attention to every detail. After you have finished the story, think about what the last sentence means. It is ironic, and somewhat puzzling. How would you describe the relationship she had with her husband, Brently Mallard? How does she change after she is told of Brently’s death in a “railroad disaster” (158)?
Identify each change she goes through and then see how you understand the end. Mark each change so that you can talk about them in class on Friday.
Please remember that I will be gone Monday but will be back Wedensday.
Mrs. Hammerman will be here as a substitute. You know her. Please be your usual sweet selves!
Blogs for the weekend (due Sunday by 6:00):
You may write a short short story from the point of view of the “citizen” in ” Samuel,” or as an omniscient narrator looking into his life a few years after the incident in the story. Spend time thinking about it before you g into it; it’s not an easy blog. Depending upon how long it is, it may count as both blogs (350 words more or less).
The other blog should be a response to one of the stories. Please make sure that it has a topic sentence to begin, and that it integrates quotations from the story. You should have a narrow focus since you won’t be writing much.
Homework for Sunday (4/20):
“Who’s Irish?” 373 (Jen)
Tuesday: 4/22
“A Rose for Emily” 296 (Faulkner)
Wednesday 4/23
“The Necklace” 523 (de Maupassant)
Friday 4/25
“Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been” 595 (Oates)
This is a scary, disturbing story; it is also an amazing piece of writing. Pay attention to plot, character, and style.
Tuesday 4/28 :
“The Cask of Amontillado” 699 (Poe); Also please read the Related Commentary on page 907
Blogs:
1. Anything
2. Response to one of the stories, following the usual format: a clear, strong, specifically focused topic sentence and integrated quotations from the story you choose. This will be of help to you as way of practicing in a consistent way for you exam. YOu will be reading and writing focused paragraphs about stories on the test.

hi klein!
i just wanted to let you know that mary and i weren’t able to meet this weekend to discuss how we’re going to write the ending for “where are you going…” so it won’t be on our blogs today but during this week we’re going to write it and that will be one of our blogs. is that ok?
